The Encore idea is becoming a fixture on the retirement landscape.

The latest evidence: the jobs-listing site RetirementJobs.com today adds links to non-profit and volunteer positions to its front page. Encore seekers looking to use their skills to solve serious social problems will get some much-needed help.

“Many job seekers over 50 are looking for work with personal meaning, work that helps make the world a better place,” said Tim Driver, founder and CEO of RetirementJobs.com, “We’re enabling non-profits to recruit the committed workers they need but often cannot afford to recruit.” Thanks to support from financial-services company Transamerica, non-profits can post job listings on RetirementJobs.com at no charge.

The move is applauded by Encore.org founder and CEO Marc Freedman. “Older volunteers offer a lifetime of experience and knowledge and can make an instant impact during their service,” Freedman said. “They act as an invaluable resource and public service is a great way for older Americans to continue their careers, often in a non-traditional environment.”

Encore.org research reveals that 31 million people ages 44 to 70 are interested in interested in doing work that combines personal meaning, continued income and social purpose. A recent Wall Street Journal article highlighted the growing interest on both the supply and the demand side for non-profit positions of interest to workers with many years of experience.

Among the organizations mentioned in the story is ReServe, which also will participate in the RetirementJobs.com project. ReServe operates in seven U.S. cities matching professionals age 55 and over with organizations that need their expertise.

Initial job-posters include The Red Cross, The Peace Corp. and the Corporation for National and Community Service.
