We mourn the passing on August 23 of Jack Rosenthal, President Emeritus of The New York Times Company Foundation and a former New York Times journalist. Jack was an influential thinker and civic leader, promoting the significance of global aging and the power of older adults as a force for social change. Along with his influential writing, he was a co-founder, with the late Robert Butler, of the Age Boom Academy, based at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia, and established in 2000 as a forum to educate journalists about the multifaceted social, economic, and health issues associated with population aging. Most significantly for the encore movement, Jack, along with Purpose Prize winner Herb Sturz, was a founder of ReServe, established in New York in 2005 and now operating in locations across the U.S., which has brought the expertise of thousands of adults 55+, providing over two million of hours of service, to nonprofits and government agencies. He will be missed.
