The latest Encore.org story featured by our media partner The Christian Science Monitor profiles Nedra Bonds, who creates “quilts with a message.”

Bonds, a retired educator and social worker, started quilting at age six. But in the 1980s, when a controversial landfill was proposed for her town, she decided to use her art to make a political statement, creating a quilt to inspire and motivate the project’s opponents. Its message came through loud and clear, but also gently and invitingly, she says, since it was made of soft fabric.

Thanks to Next Chapter Kansas City, an Encore Network member and a program of Shepherd’s Center of Kansas City, Kansas, for sending us Nedra’s story.
