“Aging is a great equalizer—it happens to all of us. The sooner my generation, millennials, and the folks that come after us can be involved in these conversations, listen and learn, the sooner we can become involved in the solutions and the greater our collective impact can be.”
Director of Community Engagement, The LGBT Community Center of the Desert
Palm Springs, CA
Alexis Ortega was born and raised in Palm Springs, CA. As the eldest of three, she was the first in her family to go to college, and received her bachelor’s in economics at Stanford University. Ortega returned to the Coachella Valley after graduation, where she immersed herself in working in LGBTQ communities.
After six years as a marketing professional at Desert AIDS Project, Ortega joined the team at the LGBT Community Center of the Desert. Her daily work includes engaging communities as allies for LGBTQ folks and developing leadership and safe spaces for LGBTQ youth in the Eastern Coachella Valley communities of Coachella, Mecca, and Thermal.
Ortega has served on the board of Leadership Coachella Valley and the Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast Committee, as well as on the Palm Springs Dyke March/Lesbo Expo organizing committee, and the California Voting Rights Act Working Group for the City of Palm Springs.
She currently serves on the Palm Springs Police Department LGBT Outreach Committee and La Mesa for Alianza Coachella Valley. She strives to be a visible professional in the Coachella Valley as an out queer young woman of color. Her passion is coalition-building amongst marginalized communities and collaborating with youth in LGBTQ work.
