Kenneth Lehman

Winning Workplaces
Purpose Prize Fellow 2007

Helping small business and non-profits become better places to work

After helping run his family’s successful automotive parts manufacturing business for 25 years, Kenneth Lehman came away believing strongly that employment practices that put people first are the key to small business success. Research funded by the Lehman family found that small businesses and nonprofits often don’t have access to information linking progressive employment practices to a positive bottom line, and they often lack the resources and knowledge to implement good workplace practices. So Lehman launched Winning Workplaces – with the slogan “Better for People, Better for Business” – to help small and midsize organizations create high-performance workplaces. To that end, the nonprofit provides affordable training and consulting, tips and recommendations through its website and e-newsletter, regional conferences, and more. The organization also celebrates the nation’s best small workplaces, honoring more than 60 businesses and organizations to date. Beginning in 2007, this “Top Small Workplaces” recognition program is being carried out in collaboration with The Wall Street Journal.
