Encore Fellows™ are embedded as part of the host organizations’ staff, which allows them to deliver greater impact than as volunteers, board members, or short-term consultants. Throughout the year, Encore brings local Fellows and social-sector executives together to share their experiences and offers other networking opportunities to further the Fellow’s understanding of the nonprofit sector.

Virtual and in-person Encore Fellowships are available.

Application & Program Acceptance

How do I apply?

Apply here to the HPE Encore Fellowships Program.

My HPE departure date is not for a number of months, can I apply now?

You must apply before August 1, 2022.  We recommend that you apply as soon as possible.

Is there a limit to the number of people that HPE will sponsor?

Yes. During FY22, the HPE Encore Fellowships Program is limited to approximately 4-6 sponsored fellowships. Candidates not selected for an HPE sponsored fellowship will be part of the Encore Fellowships Program open pool, and over time, may be matched based on local needs.

Stipend

If accepted into the HPE sponsored Encore Program, will I still work for and be paid by HPE?

No. HPE Encore Fellows™ work for their nonprofit host organization and are paid directly by the host nonprofit during the course of the fellowship time.

What is the frequency of the stipend payments, e.g. lump sum, monthly, etc.?

The $25,000 stipend is paid consistent with the normal pay cycle of the host nonprofit (generally once or twice a month) over the course of the fellowship.

Is the stipend subject to state, federal, and social security tax deductions?

Yes. The stipend is subject to normal state, federal, and social security tax deductions.

What is the employment relationship in an Encore Fellowship?

The employment relationship between a Fellow and a nonprofit is based on the standard employment practices of the nonprofit. If the Encore Fellow is categorized as an employee (i.e. W2), taxes are withheld. If the Encore Fellow is categorized as a contractor (i.e. 1099), no taxes are withheld by the nonprofit. In both cases, the Encore Fellow stipend is taxable.

Fellowships — Hosts and Locations

Are HPE Encore Fellowships offered everywhere in the US?

Yes, HPE Encore Fellowships are available throughout the U.S.

Is it possible to pick the nonprofit I want to work for?

Potentially. If selected for an HPE Sponsored Fellowship, you may identify a nonprofit organization you would like to work with, and Encore will vet them for program suitability. After your initial conversation with an Encore representative, Encore will provide you a few suggested nonprofits to consider. You and the nonprofit will then meet and interview each other. If there is not a match, Encore will look for additional nonprofit organizations that might better suit your interests.

What happens if there aren’t any hosts near me? What accommodations to the Encore Fellowships Program are being made due to COVID-19?

With the COVID-19 pandemic, geographically distant or remote virtual fellowships have dramatically increased. This is expected to continue in FY22.

Is the program limited to certain skills or business roles? Is it possible that I would not be accepted into the program?

Fellowships are not limited to certain skillsets, positions, or former levels. Almost all business roles are found in nonprofits, although they might have a different name. HPE is sponsoring a limited number of Encore Fellowships so acceptance is limited in FY22. Candidates not selected for sponsorship have the option to become part of the Encore Fellowships Program open pool, and over time, may be matched based on local needs.

Fellowships — Duration and Schedule

How long is the assignment?

The Encore Fellowship is a commitment of 1,000-hours of work with a nonprofit organization. It can be completed full-time (6 months) or part-time (12 months).

How flexible are hours? Can one work on the weekends?

The hours are very flexible. You will work with the nonprofit to determine your hours, your schedule, time-off, etc.

Can you work part-time at another job and still do the fellowship?

Potentially. Many Encore Fellowships are structured part-time.

No. Please consider the commitment to this program before applying to be an Encore Fellow.

What if the Encore Fellowship commitment of 1,000-hours isn’t completed in a year?

Typically fellowships are completed within a year.  However, extensions are occasionally required and are worked out with the nonprofit host.

If I am matched with a nonprofit and it doesn't seem to be working out, can I be re-assigned to another nonprofit?

Please give thoughtful consideration before accepting a fellowship to ensure best fit. If adjustments are needed, work with your Encore program representative. It may be possible to match you to another nonprofit, but there is no guarantee.

Is there an option to work with more than just one nonprofit? Could I work 500 hours with 1 nonprofit organization and 500 hours with a second one?

No. The fellowship is for 1,000-hours with one organization.
