Harry Cummins III found his purpose in life when he opened a boxing gym to reach kids on the streets, in gangs, from broken homes. His encore story is the latest to be featured by our media partner, The Christian Science Monitor.
As a boy, his dreams of entering the priesthood were derailed when his father was incarcerated — and Harry turned tough. High-school sports provided the encouragement that became a springboard to college and a 30-year career at General Motors.
“I use boxing and the gym as a hook, to reach kids on the streets, in gangs, from broken homes. In other words, kids like me.” Everyone, boys and girls, trains for free, Cummins says, provided they’re earning good grades.
Cummins found his purpose in bringing compassion, discipline and inspiration — qualities he sorely missed, in his childhood — to a generation of young people. Read his story in The Christian Science Monitor.
