In her encore career as Vice President of Encore.org, Phyllis Segal leads initiatives aimed at understanding and expanding encore talent as a resource to meet society’s most pressing needs. These include action-oriented research (for example, the MetLife Foundation/Encore.org papers on encore opportunities, Encore Career Survey, Survey of Nonprofit Employers, and Encores for Nonprofit Leaders); developing pathways and high-impact opportunities for encore careers in non-profits and government; and promoting promising encore employer practices. This work builds upon her extensive experience in the nonprofit and public sectors – leading organizations, advocating for social justice, teaching and practicing law.
Alongside her work at Encore.org, Segal serves on the boards of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, Heller School for Social Policy and Management, ReServe Inc., and The Conversation Project and as Chair and co-founder of the Eli J. Segal Citizen Leadership Program at Brandeis University. She served until 2014 as a member of the Board of the Corporation for National and Community Service. In her earlier career as an attorney, Segal was the founding Legal Director (and then President) of the NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund as Massachusetts Deputy Attorney General, Chair of the Federal Labor Relations Authority in the Clinton Administration and Chair of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.
