Helen Zelon is a nonfiction writer and editor and Executive Editor, Special Projects and Publications, at Encore.org. As a journalist, Zelon won multiple prizes for investigative reporting and was awarded fellowships at Harvard’s Neiman Institute and Columbia University Journalism School. She has written for New York magazine, the Village Voice, the New York Observer, City Limits, InsideSchools.org, Scientific American and MORE magazine, and has co-authored or edited policy reports by the Campaign for Fiscal Equity and the Center for New York City Affairs at the New School.
Most recently, Zelon worked as a writer and project editor with the New York Civil Liberties Union; a report she co-authored led to significant reforms in solitary confinement practices in New York State. Zelon has also taught writing at two New York City public high schools and at Sing-Sing Prison in Ossining, New York.
