Borje "Bud" Saxberg

After 53 years of teaching at the Foster School of Business at the University of Washington in Seattle, I decided that the time had come to retire and have a new generation of colleagues take over. Even though we recognize how short life is, it’s amazing the variety of engagements and responsibilities that we’ve experienced. Yet it can be quite brutal to have your last Friday working day, and then wake up Monday morning and ask yourself “And now what?”

I consider myself very lucky that only a short time into retirement I was presented with an opportunity to serve the Foster business school in a part-time unpaid capacity. My encore is assisting my former employer to expand the appeal of its programs to foreign students. The school needed a personalized response to inquiries from corresponding programs located elsewhere in the world. Occasionally, such a contact develops into visits by international program administrators to discuss details of program relationships involving faculty and student exchanges.

The business school also receives numerous requests from colleagues around the world who are interested in being considered for a Visiting Scholar appointment. I appreciate that I can bring a personal aspect to this process. The UW is in a fabulous location with an academic base that is world class. I see myself as a contributor to our brand–a promise to deliver the best in our relationships.

Having an academic and consulting background in management, I have over the years been involved with community organizations and the challenges they face. Boards of non-profit organizations show the same pressure points as businesses, while also continuing their missions to serve others. I have served on the boards of the Nordic Heritage Museum, the School Employees Credit Union of Washington, PEMCO Mutual Insurance Co., and as a member of the University Houses Advisory Council for UWRA and Era Living.
