Seventeen years ago, I sat behind the wheel of a blue Volkswagen Beetle, speeding through the night on Highway 101 between San Francisco and Palo Alto.
Seated beside me in the passenger seat was my hero and mentor, John W. Gardner…then 85 years old. I took the late-night ride as the chance to ask him about his life and legacy, looking back from the perspective of one’s ninth decade.
