The year 1968 is often cited as the beginning of a long period of division among baby boomers. But 40 years later, many members of that generation are finding common cause in giving back through encore careers, national service or volunteering.

The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Michael Mullen, is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Class of '68. He is helping bridge the divisions that linger from that tumultuous year. In his comments at the ServiceNation summit, linking military service and community service, and honoring both.

"I also happen to be at the leading edge of the baby boomer generation," Adm. Mullen said. "Some of you might know how old that makes me..."

"The baby boomer generation (that) is retiring has reaped in so many ways of the benefits of this great nation. And they are, we are, a wealth of talent and resources.

"I want to encourage my generation to reach out and continue to serve throughout the land and throughout the world."
