The latest Encore.org story featured by our media partner, The Christian Science Monitor, is that of Bonnie Chang, whose encore is helping prepare Asian immigrants to pass the U.S. citizenship test.

“In my classes, I see more and more students seeking the freedoms that come with American citizenship,” she says.

Chang was born in Taiwan and became a U.S. citizen in the 1970s, when, she says, sentiments towards immigrants were less hostile. “Back then, most Americans didn’t feel immigrants were taking over their jobs and weren’t afraid that we were violent,” she remembers.
